The Quest for the WKN World Title Continues for Snoddon with Win in Cyprus

March 31, 2023

Jay Snoddon sealed his credentials as the number one Challenger for the WKN featherweight world title. The Dundonald nineteen year-old travelled with two of his ProKick teammates to compete on the WKN UpperCut Fight Night in Nicosia, Cyprus last weekend, Saturday 25th March. This was his third fight in three months in 2023 and he successfully registered his third win of the year stopping Alex Kitromilides in the third round.

The current WKN European K1-style champion, 'Snoddon' fought with his usual pressurised pace giving Kitromilides no breathing space in the first two rounds. Sensing his opponent was tired, he stepped it up another level in the third and registered two standing counts in the third round before the referee stopped the fight on the request of Kitromilides’ corner. Snoddon’s eyes are now firmly on the WKN ProAm K1 Featherweight World Title and negotiations continue with the World Kickboxing Network to confirm an opponent for ProKick’s European Champion. Keep your eyes peeled for that announcement coming soon…

The ProKick trio were in Cyprus for less than 36 hours but experienced a life-time of memories. 15 year old Adam Davidson and 16 year old Gary Lynch also competed on the UpperCut show. Adam fought a tough Cypriot teenager, George Manelidis who came out like a rocket in the first round and put Adam on the back foot straight away. The ProKicker managed to keep him at arm’s length for a short time landing some successful low leg kicks, but the relentless nature and strength of Manelidis’ shots were too much for the young Belfast teen and the referee stepped in and stopped the fight at the end of the first round.

Gary Lynch, at 16, has also been busy in 2023 having previously fought and won in Wexford in February and at ProKick’s own Champions Fight League in January #CFL3. His opponent Mohamad Altahena also came rushing out at a frenetic pace in the first round, causing Lynch to have to work out the best way to attack without getting caught up in the frenzy. After a tight two rounds, Gary had to win the mental battle to go back out in the third and final round and do all that he could to ensure he got the judges’ attention. Altahena was tiring, wanted to hold and at times wrestle Gary to the ground, but Gary managed to do enough when dropping Altahena with a left-hook that clenched the decision for Lynch and his hand was raised for the third time in 2023 with a points win from the judges.

While the team travel to compete, these trips give young ProKickers an incredible opportunity to experience different cultures, see the world and meet people. That’s the beauty of the sport and the opportunities that all ProKick members have available to them. The hospitality experienced from Chris Christodoulou and his team was first class, the team were treated to an array of fresh, delicious food on both days, tasting new delicacies for the first time. No chicken nuggets for the boys on this trip!

Now, it was back to business as usual for the entire team all this week; back to school for Adam and Gary, while Jay got back to ProKick HQ and hopefully starting preparation for the BIGGEST prize in Sport - 'Becoming a World Champion!.
